The Resume & Cover Letter

So far we've viewed job applications; we've broken down the conventions of job postings; we've reflected on our applicable skils; we've discussed the importance of document design and language. FOr this assignment, you will be applying to the job posting you analyzed for SWA4 (The Job Posting) & editing your SWA3 (The Cover Letter) appropriately.
Rhetorical situation
You are applying for a new job, good luck! Resumes are essential for entering the job market - most professional jobs require at least a resume and cover letter upon applying. Use this assignment as an opportunity to create a resume that you will be able to update during your professional and academic development. 

Genre & Medium
Resumes typically contain sections like:
  • Professional Summary
  • Skills
  • References
  • Experiance
  • Qualifications
  • Education
  • Contact Information
Audience
Your audience is the hiring manager for your posting!

Practical details
You've selected and completed an analysis of a job posting for SWA4, now you will use the skills ythat you have gained in the course to apply for the job. You will edit your SWA3 (The Cover Letter) to better suit the job posting you have selected.
Consider:
  • What kind of position is available in your posting?
  • What skills are necessary to complete the job that is posted?
    • Do your skills transfer?
  • How is the job posting presented?
    • Where did you find this job posting?
  • What information should you leave out for the specific job posting?
Keep the design of your document in mind at all times (like we've discussed at the beginning of the semester. Remember. this document is going to represent your professional character and ability - cater the design of your document to best represent yourself, while meeting the needs of the posting.

Your task is to complete two things:
  1. Edit you SWA4 to cater to the needs of the posting you've selected
  2. Create a Resume to apply to the job posting you analyzed in SWA3. 

The Rubric


Conventions of Genre - 25 Points
The author has created a document that is professional and appropriate to the given job posting. The document demonstrates clear rhetorical choices throughout its entirety.
  • The information included in the Resume is relevant to both its author and the job posting.
Quality of Revision - 25 Points
The authors revision of their cover letter caters to their new rhetorical situation of the job posting to which they will be applying.

Design - 25 Points
The document is both visually pleasing to look at, but it also maintains consistent design elements throughout its entirety.
  • Headings, fonts, and other design elements are consistent, not random.
  • ​Author uses more than just bullets and lists, but considers how to make resume stand out.

Considers audience and genre expectations throughout the documents language.
